{"id":14634,"date":"2023-10-23T16:49:28","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T16:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/daric-persian.com\/?p=14634"},"modified":"2023-10-23T16:50:00","modified_gmt":"2023-10-23T16:50:00","slug":"turkeys-president-submits-swedens-nato-bid-to-parliament-for-ratification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daric-persian.com\/?p=14634","title":{"rendered":"Turkey&#8217;s president submits Sweden&#8217;s NATO bid to parliament for ratification"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turkey&#8217;s president submits Sweden&#8217;s NATO bid to parliament for ratification<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey&#8217;s parliament is set to vote on Sweden&#8217;s bid to join NATO after President Erdogan submitted a protocol for Stockholm&#8217;s admission into the military alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has submitted a protocol for Sweden\u2019s admission into NATO to Turkey\u2019s parliament for ratification, his office said on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erdogan had delayed ratification of Sweden&#8217;s membership, accusing Stockholm of being too soft on Kurdish militants and other groups he sees as security threats. Turkey has also been angered by a series of Quran-burning protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All 31 NATO allies must endorse Sweden\u2019s membership. Turkey and Hungary are the only two allies that have yet to ratify it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A brief statement from the presidential communications directorate said Erdogan had signed the protocol on Sweden&#8217;s NATO accession, which will then be submitted to Turkey&#8217;s Grand National Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2023\/01\/21\/quran-burning-protest-scuppers-turkey-sweden-nato-talks\">&#8216;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For its part, the Nordic country has welcomed the move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I am glad to hear that Turkish President Erdogan has now handed over the ratification documents to the Turkish parliament,&#8221; Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Now it is up to the parliament to deal with the matter. We look forward to NATO membership.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweden and its neighbour Finland abandoned decades of military non-alignment after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his country&#8217;s troops to invade Ukraine in February 2022.
